The very first thing that you need to know about when you want to learn how to build a dog house is how to construct a good and reliable base. One very essential factor that you need to keep in mind is the size of your base (which will also determine the size of the entire dog house). This should depend on the average adult size of your dog breed and not his current size. Apart from that, your dog should be able to stand, sit and lie down comfortably and still have enough space for his or her food or water bowls.
Another very important detail that you need to know about when you want to learn how to build a dog house is the kind of material to use. Stay away from treated woods as much as possible as this could be toxic to your pets. Make sure that the wood is also water-proof and is resilient enough to stand the test of time and of course, the ever changing weather.
You can use a 2 x 4 board to construct a square base, depending on the dimensions that you have chosen for your dog house. You can use a .5-inch plywood to cover the frame. Make sure that the sides of the wood are properly cut and are without splints as this may injure your dogs.
After you are done making the base, you can now start forming the walls, again with the use of a 2 x 4 board. But before you cut the boards apart, make sure that you create studs around your walls for support. For the rear wall, secure the stud a few inches away from the center to make room for roof installation. This should go the same for the front walls (where the entrance is located). After you are done making the four walls, cut out the entrance on the front wall. Again, base this according to your dog’s average full grown size and not on his current size. Position and nail your walls on to the base. Make sure that you nail each corner for added security and stability.
The next step on how to build a dog house is roof making and installation. First, set the desired dimensions for the pitch and the strut of your roof. Make sure that the front and rear roof struts are centred around the front and the rear wall frames. Position them accordingly and nail them into place.
When installing the rafters, use the corner of the doghouses as markers to make sure that they are properly positioned at the center. Cut out a notch at both the left and right rafters to fit it snugly at the corners of your front and rear wall frames. You can use a .5-inch plywood to cover the entire roof.
And finally, the last step on how to build a dog house is the installation of the shingles. The shingles should be 12 inches long and should overlay each other by an inch. Make sure that you draw a pattern at the roof to ensure proper placement. Remember, the first bottom row of the roof should be two shingles thick. Nail them into place and add in the subsequent shingles one at a time until the entire roof is covered.
